How To Crochet A Blanket

Disclaimer: People with no crocheting experience might not understand specific terms used in this article.

Crocheting is an incredible way to keep your hands busy. Not only does it cure boredom, but it also gives you an amazing ending product! Projects like blankets are known to be very time-consuming, so you must be patient and trust the process. It is always better to take your time with long projects than rush and end up unhappy with what you made.

The first step to making a blanket is knowing what type of blanket you want to make. There are many blanket patterns online but in this article, I will cover two blanket patterns.

The first pattern only needs you to know the single crochet stitch. Decide what color or colors you want your blanket to have. This first pattern uses the Bernat blanket vintage white color but you can use any color.

Materials needed:

– Four skeins of category six super bulky weight yarn (any color) (1200g/804m in total)
– 12 mm crochet hook
– Scissors
– Tapestry Needle

Estimated time: Four and a half hours

– Start off your blanket by chaining 75 stitches.

Round one:
– In the second chain from the hook make a single crochet.
-Skip a chain and make three single crochet into the next chain.
-Repeat this pattern until you reach the last chain.
-Single crochet into that chain and turn your work.
Round two:
– Chain one and single crochet into the first stitch.
– Skip a stitch and do three single crochet into the next one.
– You then need to skip the next two stitches and do three single crochet in the next stitch.
– Repeat this pattern until you’re left with two stitches.
– Skip on stitch and single crochet into the next stitch.
– Turn your work and repeat round two for the rest of your blanket.

When your ball runs out of yarn, you will need to tie the ending of your ball of yarn to the starting of another ball of yarn. There are many methods to do this but I find one better than the others. Here’s a quick tutorial! You can also use this method to change colors.

The next blanket is not too difficult since it will be repeating the same stitch.

For this blanket, you will need to know the half-double crochet stitch. Again, you can make this any color you want. You can also make this as long as you want. Something that is customizable is the type of yarn you want to make it out of. Just note that making it with thinner yarn will make the process longer.

Material needed:

– Yarn (any color) (any category of thickness)
– Scissors
– Tapestry needle
– Crochet hook (size depends on the size of the yarn)

Estimated time: Four and a half hours

– The size of this blanket is completely up to you! Just make sure you add three extra chains to your number.

Round one:

– Work your first half double crochet into the third chain from the loop.
To make a half double crochet, yarn over, insert your hook into the loop, yarn over and pull through the loop, and lastly pull that same loop through all the loops on your hook.
– Continue to work a half-double crochet into each chain.
-Once you reach the end of chain two, flip your work.

Round two:

– Work a half double crochet into the back loop of the stitch
– Repeat this stitch until the end of the round
– Continue to chain two after every round.

I hope you use one of these patterns for future projects! They are very simple to make but are really pretty patterns to use!
