TWICE is a South Korean pop group formed by JYP Entertainment. This girl group is composed of 9 members: Naeyon, Jeongyoung, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu. The group was constructed under the television show Sixteen, hosted by JYP in 2015. TWICE officially debuted in October 2015.

The name for the group was created by JYP, which explained that they wanted the group to touch people’s hearts twice- once with their eyes and again with their ears. Their fans are known as “ONCES.” The members of Twice explain that “If you love us even once, we will repay your love with twice our love”.

Although the group debuted with their song “Like Ooh-Ahh,” TWICE began rising to fame with their single “Cheer Up,” released on April 25th, 2016. “Cheer Up” charted at number one on the Gaon Digital Chart, and later became the best-performing single of the year. Their first award as a group was at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards for Best New Female Artist.

Currently, TWICE has a total of 7 full albums (including their Japanese line of songs), 12 EPs, 5 compilation albums (including their Japanese versions), and 6 repackaged albums. They also have a great line of singles in both Japanese and Korean!

Now for an introduction for the members of TWICE:

Nayeon: Nayeon is the oldest member of the girl group and is also the main vocalist and the face of the group. She secretly auditioned for JYP Entertainment and became a trainee for the company on September 15th, 2010. Originally, Nayeon was set to debut in a girl group titled “6mix” with other members Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Sana.

Jeongyeon: Jeongyeon is the second oldest member of TWICE and is also a lead vocalist of the group. She auditioned for JYP at a young age but failed to become a trainee, then later auditioned at JYP’s open call on March 10th, 2010 and succeeded. She was also accepted into another company, SM entertainment. Jeongyeon’s favorite instrument is the saxophone.

Momo: Momo is a singer and dancer, originally born in Japan. She is the third oldest in TWICE. Momo’s position in the group is being the lead dancer, vocalist, and sub-rapper. Momo was the only one eliminated from Sixteen (the girl group survival show that preluded TWICE) and was the only one to be brought back, later debuting in TWICE. Momo has a dog named Boo.

Sana: Sana is also a Japanese singer and vocalist of the group. She passed the auditions for JYP Entertainment and became a trainee under their program in April 2012. Sana has a very iconic line from their release of the song “Cheer Up.” “Shy Shy Shy” became a very popular lyric, and Sana herself did not expect for the line to get all the attention it has been getting. You may have seen many idols or people in general copying Sana.

Jihyo: Jihyo is the leader of TWICE and also the main vocalist. Jihyo became a trainee when she was 8 years old, on July 15th 2005. She was scouted by JYP Entertainment and she trained for over 10 years. Initially, Jihyo was training to become an actress.

Mina: Mina is a Japanese singer and lyricist and is one of the main dancers in TWICE. Scouted while shopping with her mother, Mina auditioned for the franchise of JYP Entertainment in Japan and joined in January of 2014. Mina also studied ballet for 11 years. Mina was born in Texas but moved to Japan when she was a toddler.

Dahyun: Dahyun is one of the vocalists of TWICE and is the main rapper. Dahyun was scouted by a casting associate who watched the showcase that she was performing in. It was stated by JYP that they chose Dahyun because of her charm on stage. Dahyun first gained popularity from a video of her dancing in a church. She was doing an eagle dance.

Chaeyoung: Chaeyoung is a songwriter, dancer, and a rapper. Just like Dahyun, she was assigned the group’s main rapper. She successfully passed auditions for the entertainment group on June 6th, 2012. Chaeyoung likes basketball.

Tzuyu: Tzuyu is a Taiwanese singer and dancer. She is a lead dancer, sub-vocalist, visual of the group, and maknae (youngest of the group.) She joined JYP on November 15th, 2012. She is the tallest and calmest member of TWICE.
